Ingredients

For the Chutney

  • Fresh grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Roasted chana dal – 2 tablespoons
  • Green chillies – 1 to 2
  • Ginger – ½ inch piece
  • Tamarind – small marble-sized piece
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – approximately ¼ cup

For Tempering

  • Oil – 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon
  • Urad dal – ½ teaspoon
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Dry red chilli – 1 (optional)

Method

  1. Prepare all ingredients and roughly chop green chillies and ginger.
  2. Add coconut, roasted chana dal, green chillies, ginger, tamarind, and salt into the small chutney jar.
  3. Add water gradually and grind using pulse mode initially, followed by short continuous cycles.
  4. Scrape the sides once and grind again until the chutney reaches a smooth yet slightly textured consistency.
  5. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, and dry red chilli. Allow them to splutter.
  6. Pour the tempering over the chutney and mix gently.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with idli, dosa, vada, or pongal.
